Pastoral Care

Sunbeam Room, Rainbow Room, Talk Time and Thrive

We are very proud of our Sunbeam and Rainbow Rooms, which are the hub of the pastoral support for our school.  The Sunbeam and Rainbow Rooms are for any children when they need it!

If you think your child needs support, speak to the Sunbeam or Rainbow Room staff directly, or to the Class Teacher, Head or Deputy. Mrs Hunt, our Sunbeam Room staff member is usually outside KS1 at the beginning of the day and Mrs Hynes and Mrs Sherwood, our Rainbow Room staff, are usually outside the Junior Hall door when the children enter school and they are all happy to have a chat. Alternatively, meetings can be arranged via the office.

There are many reasons why children might need support - maybe they are finding friendships difficult, are going through family upheavals or a bereavement, are anxious about something, find the busy-ness of the classroom a challenge, or they might simply be having a tricky day. Any child might need support from the Sunbeam or Rainbow Room at any time and we do our best to make sure children get the right support at the right time.

Whatever the issue, children can be sure that they will be met with a smile and a listening ear. The children will spend time having a chat, playing a game or eating a snack and will return to their learning as soon as they are ready. We are so pleased that, in time, children are able to recognise when they need to come to the Rooms and when they are calm and confident enough to return to their day.

Beyond this general support given when children need it, we also offer Talk Time, a regular, timetabled slot in the Sunbeam and Rainbow Room to receive support for an identified area of need. We ask for signed parental permission for Talk Time and will update you on how your child did at the end of the support.

We also assess children using Thrive in the Rainbow Room and use these assessments to offer support, helping children to move through different stages of development in an identified area linked to their personal, social and emotional development. Our Rainbow Room staff update their Thrive training every year. Through carefully-planned activities, children move through the stages of ‘being’, ‘doing’, ‘thinking’, ‘power & identity’ and ‘skills & structure’. Again, we ask for signed parental permission for Thrive support and will update you when the support is finished.

The Sunbeam and Rainbow Room staff lead monthly ‘Afternoon Meets’ for any parents and carers who would like to attend. These are open to all and a great time to enjoy a tea or coffee, get to know the staff and what they do, get advice on a range of matters and rummage through our second hand school uniform and free food to take what you need. We hope that you will come along every month, but it’s also great if you only come every now and then. Come up to the school office on the first Wednesday of each month at 1.45pm and we will put the kettle on and meet you in the new Acorn Room.

Hope to see you there!
